Lawmakers in Stockbridge, Georgia, have removed 23-year-old Mayor Jayden Williams from office, citing allegations that he misused a city credit card and engaged in sexually explicit communications with a teenager. The Stockbridge City Council voted 3-0 to remove Williams, about 10 months after he was elected as the city's youngest mayor. The city confirmed that the removal followed formal proceedings conducted in accordance with local procedures. As a result, Williams is no longer serving as mayor of the city, which has a population of nearly 30,000 and is located about 20 miles southeast of Atlanta. The city hired a law firm to investigate the allegations against Williams. The probe found that late last year, Williams had flirted with and exchanged explicit images of himself with a high school student who had just turned 18. The two had been communicating via text and Instagram messages, initially discussing the student’s potential participation in Williams’ mentorship program. When presented with messages and images, Williams confirmed he had sent nude photos. Earlier, he had told a local reporter he could not recall if he had ever sent such images. During a lengthy council meeting, lawyer Robbie Ashe, representing the investigators, questioned Williams about whether receiving nude photos was so common that he didn’t remember when he received them. Williams responded that such exchanges are typical for his generation. "It’s not memorable nor is it abnormal for somebody my age," he said. "That’s not abnormal for somebody my age." The city now has six months to organize a special election for the mayoral position. Acting Mayor Elton Alexander, a council member and mayor pro-tem, said the decision to remove Williams was difficult but necessary to address the allegations. Williams’ lawyer, Robert Kenner, argued that the allegations did not justify his removal, noting that any inappropriate communications occurred before Williams took office. Kenner also stated that the council meeting was disappointing, as he believed the removal lacked solid evidence. Williams admitted to making improper purchases using his city-issued credit card but claimed it was an accident, as the card looked similar to his personal one. The city has been reimbursed for those expenses, and no criminal charges have been filed. Williams won the 2022 election with about 54.8% of the vote, defeating incumbent Anthony Ford. However, Stockbridge operates under a city manager form of government, which means the mayor's role is largely ceremonial, with only tie-breaking voting power on council matters. The city emphasized that municipal operations will continue without disruption, with the city manager and department heads maintaining their responsibilities. Alexander, the interim mayor, stated he has no interest in running for the position, as it would require giving up his voting rights.
