Teenager loses left hand in incident

A 15-year-old high school student in Lens, France, had his left hand amputated after an incident during mobilizations in early October, according to a press conference held by his lawyers on Wednesday.

Injuries described as war-like

The lawyer, Bertrand Wattez, described the teenager's wounds as "similar to war injuries" and stated that the boy picked up a fragment of his right hand at 10:30, when an explosion occurred on his left side.

Explosion caused severe damage

The student then began to run, unaware that the explosion had torn off his left hand. Wattez indicated that a "type of deafening grenade" was the cause of the injuries. The teenager's right hand is also damaged, and he was hit in other parts of his body.

Legal actions being taken

A complaint has been filed with the senior investigating judge in Béthune for criminal facts, with the lawyer announcing the submission of a civil party complaint. Wattez expressed concern over the prosecutor's stance, which supported the police version of events suggesting the teenager was responsible for his own harm by picking up the grenade himself.

Teenager remains hospitalized

The young man remains hospitalized, with an unknown discharge date.
