A British man has died after falling approximately 200 feet during his descent from the summit of Torrecerredo, the highest peak of the Picos de Europa mountain range in northern Spain. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, with Spanish emergency services receiving a report of the fall at around 2:20 p.m. A mountain rescue team deployed aboard a Spanish Civil Guard helicopter located the man's body, which was found approximately 65 feet below the summit. His remains were transported to La Morgal, a regional sports and aviation facility in Llanera near the Asturian city of Gijon. The man's belongings were scattered during the fall.
The mountaineer's body was recovered after being spotted by a helicopter team. According to one report, the incident occurred on the east side of Torrecerredo, while another states it was on the east side of the peak. Torrecerredo has an elevation of approximately 8,690 feet (2,649 meters).
A 54-year-old French woman was also treated for a leg injury after she fell in the Jou Sin Tierre area of the mountain range on the same afternoon. She was transported to the Hospital of the Orient in Arriondas, according to emergency services. One report states she was accompanied by another climber who left her to seek a phone signal to call for help, while another does not specify the circumstances of her injury.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said: "We are in contact with the local authorities following reports of the death of a British national in Spain."
