Microsoft is updating how OneDrive storage is managed in its multi-user subscriptions, a change that will impact customers who use these plans. Previously, the Microsoft 365 Family plan offered 1 terabyte of OneDrive storage per person, allowing up to six users to share a total of 6 terabytes. Starting now for new subscribers, this plan shifts to a shared pool of 2 terabytes for all users combined, rather than a per-person allocation. For current users, this change will take effect when they renew their subscriptions on or after May 2, 2027. The same adjustment applies to the Microsoft 365 Premium plan, which also allows up to six users but now offers a shared 2 terabyte storage limit instead of 1 terabyte per user.
Microsoft has begun informing affected customers through email notifications about this shift. In its documentation, the company explains that the change aims to provide "a more flexible experience." While users can now exceed the previous 1 terabyte individual limit, there is a potential downside: one person could use a large portion of the shared storage, limiting access for others. Additionally, the total available storage decreases from a maximum of 6 terabytes to only 2 terabytes.
To help users adjust, Microsoft plans a transition period during which affected subscribers will receive extra, temporary storage space at no additional cost. However, this bonus is only temporary. Starting on May 2, 2027, or after that date, families that exceed the 2 terabyte limit will need to either pay for more storage or delete files from OneDrive. Microsoft states that users who exceed their quota will still be able to access their data for up to one year, giving them time to resolve the issue. Individual alerts will be sent to notify affected users of their situation.
Microsoft has not changed the subscription prices for these plans. The Microsoft 365 Family plan still costs 129 euros per year, with some resellers offering it for slightly less. The Microsoft 365 Premium plan, which includes additional AI features, remains at 219 euros per year. However, a small benefit for users is that AI features are now available to all family members, not just the subscription holder. This means any family member can use Copilot, Microsoft's AI assistant, to help manage and clean up their OneDrive files to stay within the 2 terabyte limit.
