Vitamin D poisoning cases reported in Balearic Islands

In May 2025, multiple cases of vitamin D poisoning were reported at various health centers across the Balearic Islands. A group of about a dozen young adults showed similar symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, high levels of calcium in the blood, and severe kidney damage.

Cause traced to a defective supplement

A health investigation found that the incidents were linked to a defective dietary supplement that was heavily overdosed with vitamin D. All the affected individuals had taken this supplement, which led to the toxic effects observed.

Vitamin D’s essential but complex role

Vitamin D is a substance essential to life, found in certain foods and produced by the body when cholesterol in the skin reacts to ultraviolet rays from the sun. Although it is classified as a vitamin, it functions more like a hormone in the body.

Toxicity risk due to its chemical properties

The non-water-soluble nature of vitamin D means it can build up in the body over time. When consumed in excessive amounts, it can become toxic, leading to serious health issues such as those experienced by the victims in the Balearic Islands.
