Opponents leave camp near A69 highway

Opponents of the A69 highway gradually left a camp set up near the disputed highway in Cambounet-sur-le-Sor (Tarn) on Sunday, following a demonstration without any notable incidents, according to information from the prefecture.

Camp remained active into Sunday morning

According to a spokesperson from the prefecture, the night and morning were calm at the camp after a Saturday marked by a public demonstration that also proceeded without incident. Around 10:00, approximately 800 people were still at the camp, located about one kilometer from the A69 "but departures have been regularly observed since," according to the same source.

Weekend events highlighted resistance

Round tables, concerts, theatrical performances, and film screenings were scheduled over these three days of mobilization, throughout a weekend designed as a tribute to the various key moments of the mobilization against the A69 since the start of the works in the spring of 2023.

Resistance has taken many forms

Over the past three years, opposition to what has become a symbol of environmental struggles has taken many forms: demonstrations, hunger strikes, occupations of trees in protected areas (ZAD) and a cascade of legal actions.

Organizers emphasize ongoing struggle

"We were, are and will remain this stone in their shoe and even if the highway is about to open, this struggle has opened the doors to many others, successful," stated one of the organizers on Saturday.

Highway set to open in November

The concessionaire of the highway, Atosca, announced on Friday the opening of this 53-kilometer artery between Toulouse and Castres for the "first week of November."
