Former BBC presenter John Humphrys has released a documentary questioning the role of the British Royal Family and whether the people of the United Kingdom should have the right to choose their head of state. Titled The Royals: Time to Go?, the documentary, produced for Channel 4, features interviews with both supporters and critics of the monarchy. Humphrys, a well-known BBC presenter for many years, argues in favor of replacing the monarchy with an elected president as the head of state. Humphrys expressed admiration for King Charles III in many respects but emphasized that the issue is ultimately about choice. He recalled memories of Queen Elizabeth II visiting Cardiff during his childhood, watching her travel down Newport Road. He mentioned that his father, who never attended royal events, had a strong sense of independence, which he believes shaped his own views on the monarchy. In the documentary, Humphrys challenges the idea that questioning the Royal Family is taboo in a democracy. He argues that the monarch, though not a political leader, is still seen as the head of state, and people are expected to show respect through gestures like bowing. He believes this should be a matter of public choice rather than tradition. Throughout his career, Humphrys had several encounters with the Queen, including a visit to Buckingham Palace, where he spoke to her and even the corgis. He recalls asking for an interview, only to be told "no" by the Queen. The palace has not yet commented on the documentary.
