Senegal has signed a cooperation agreement with **Sonelgaz**, an Algerian energy company, to enhance collaboration in electricity production and distribution. The deal was signed on October 3 in Algiers by the heads of Senegal's state-owned electricity company, **Senelec**, and **Sonelgaz**. This agreement follows recent power outages in Senegal, which were caused by technical issues at electricity production facilities and fuel shortages in September. While the agreement outlines the intent to strengthen cooperation, the specific projects, scope, and funding details have not been fully disclosed. Algeria has emphasized that this partnership is closely tied to Senegal's broader energy strategy, particularly its plans to develop a **Gas-to-Power** initiative. Algeria's Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, stated that his country is prepared to support Senegal in this endeavor and share expertise "on the entire energy value chain." Senegal has already begun laying the northern section of its gas pipeline, which is about 85 kilometers long and designed to transport up to 300 million cubic feet of gas daily. This infrastructure is intended to link offshore gas reserves to power plants and industrial centers. For **Sonelgaz**, the agreement represents an expansion of its operations across Africa. In June, the company opened a 40 megawatt power plant in Niamey, Niger, and started building a similar facility in Chad. Additionally, **Sonelgaz** has been involved in various projects across the continent, including the development of energy networks, training programs, and the transfer of technical skills. This partnership highlights the growing interdependence between African nations in addressing energy challenges and promoting regional development. As both countries look to enhance their energy security and infrastructure, the collaboration between Senegal and Algeria may serve as a model for future partnerships in the region.
