A five-story building housing Hostel Daze, a boys’ hostel, collapsed in Satya Niketan, a densely populated neighborhood in south-west Delhi, trapping dozens of people and killing at least one. The incident occurred around 13:30 local time (08:00 GMT) on Sunday. The hostel is located near a Delhi University campus, and reports suggest as many as 50 people were inside the building at the time of the collapse. At least two people were hospitalized in critical condition, and six individuals had been rescued by the time of the latest reports. Officials did not immediately provide the number of people still trapped, though media reported that dozens of people lived in the building. Eyewitnesses said many of the students in the hostel were in their rooms at the time of the collapse, as there were no classes on Sunday. Some of the trapped students reportedly made calls from under the rubble, according to a lawmaker at the scene. Rescue operations were ongoing, with police, firefighters, and teams from India’s National Disaster Response Force searching through the rubble. Earthmovers were also clearing debris to help rescuers reach those still trapped inside. Construction work had been ongoing in the basement of the building. A nearby shop owner told ANI, a news agency, that the building was under a 100-year lease and that the leaseholder had undertaken excavation work in the basement to increase their income. The owner noted that while the upper part of the building had been reinforced, the pillars below were weak. Construction workers had also been buried in the collapse. A legislative assembly member reported that some people had been rescued, and several others trapped inside were making phone calls for help while rescuers remained in contact with them. Some reports indicated that an adjacent building had also collapsed, while others stated that Delhi’s chief minister, Rekha Gupta, said an adjacent building had been evacuated as a precaution. The cause of the collapse was not immediately known, but the Delhi Police said the building was 40 to 50 years old. The National Students’ Union of India called for an investigation into the incident and urged the government to hold those responsible accountable. Police are searching for the building’s owner. Building collapses are a recurring concern in parts of India, especially during the June-to-September monsoon season, when heavy or prolonged rain can weaken aging structures.
