Apple is introducing a new feature called iPhone Handoff with the upcoming iOS 27 update. This feature allows users to use the same eSIM number on two different iPhones simultaneously, making it easier to switch between devices without changing phone numbers. Initially, the feature will be available to T-Mobile customers in the United States and Deutsche Telekom users in Germany. T-Mobile has stated that users who want to take advantage of this feature will be charged an additional $5 per month.
It’s important to note that the two devices cannot use the same number at the same time. T-Mobile subscribers will be able to choose which phone is active at any given moment and switch as needed. When they do, their calls, voicemail, messages, and the Find My feature will automatically move to the iPhone they are currently using. Additionally, iCloud data and third-party apps will sync across both devices, ensuring a seamless experience.
Setting up iPhone Handoff can be done either through the Settings app on the current device or when activating a new iPhone. On the newer phone, users need to go to the Cellular settings, then tap either "Set up Cellular" or "Add eSIM." From there, they select an iPhone, continue, and choose "Transfer." After following the onscreen prompts on both devices, users only need to unlock the iPhone they want to use. A message saying "Switched to this iPhone" will appear on the screen to confirm that the device is now using their number.
To use iPhone Handoff, both devices must be running iOS 27 and share the same Apple ID. Apple is set to release iOS 27 on September 14, making this new feature available to eligible users shortly after.
