Google launches AI satellite

Google launched a satellite in September that is equipped with specialized computer chips called TPU chips, designed to perform artificial intelligence tasks more efficiently. The satellite is part of an experiment to test how these chips function in the harsh environment of space, including exposure to radiation and extreme temperatures.

Satellite generates a poem

During the experiment, the satellite successfully ran a type of AI model called Gemma and used it to generate a poem. This demonstrated that the AI system could operate in space, even though it is far from Earth and subject to different environmental conditions.

Testing AI in space conditions

The main objective of the mission is to evaluate how well the TPU chips perform in space. This includes assessing their reliability, speed, and ability to handle the unique challenges of the space environment, such as cosmic radiation and temperature fluctuations.

Focus on future space applications

Google aims to use the findings from this experiment to improve its AI technology for potential future applications in space. This could include tasks like analyzing data from space missions, supporting autonomous spacecraft, or enhancing communication systems in orbit.
