Sleep and weight loss connection

Researchers and doctors are studying how sleep influences body shape, including its effects on weight loss, hunger, calorie consumption, and body reserves. Sleep deprivation is linked to fat gain, and sleeping less than seven hours can create a "sleep debt" that disrupts hunger hormones, glucose metabolism, and stress management.

Sleep duration and body fat

A 2010 study published in Annals of Internal Medicine found that for the same diet over 14 days, sleeping 5 hours and 30 minutes instead of 8 hours and 30 minutes reduced weight loss in the form of body fat by 55% and increased the loss of lean mass by 60%.

Sleep extension and calorie intake

In 2022, a randomized trial published in JAMA Internal Medicine among overweight adults who slept less than 6 hours and 30 minutes showed that extending sleep time resulted in an average of 270 kilocalories less consumed per day under real-life conditions.
