Morgan Freeman, the 89-year-old actor famous for his role in The Shawshank Redemption, has called the use of artificial intelligence to replicate voices an act of "stealing." He made the comments as concerns grow over the increasing use of AI to mimic famous voices and create deepfakes—computer-generated videos or audio that appear to show people saying or doing things they never actually did. Speaking to ITV News, Freeman said that individuals affected by such technology may need to seek legal recourse, adding, "On the one hand, it's pretty nice. On the other hand, it's stealing. Get lawyers." He also noted the difficulty in tracing the origin of deepfakes and AI-generated content, which are becoming more common. Freeman has also been deeply involved in efforts to preserve blues music, a genre rooted in African American history and known for its emotional depth and storytelling. He is a co-owner of Ground Zero, a blues club in Clarksdale, Mississippi, which he helped found after two backpackers asked him where they could hear authentic blues music. Recently, Freeman produced an album with the British Chineke! Orchestra, a group known for promoting diversity in classical music. He said that if the album were to win a Grammy, it would "spike my good feeling." Reflecting on the blues, Freeman described it as a genre that captures human pain and longing, saying, "The blues itself is a lament. It's pain. It's the expression of loss and want. That's the blues." Freeman also praised the 2025 Academy Award-winning film Sinners, which used blues music to explore themes of supernatural horror. He called the film's use of blues a "powerful moment," noting that the genre often finds new life in unexpected places. "There are corners where it is nourished and sooner or later it'll sprout, like now," he said, highlighting his belief that the blues will continue to influence and inspire future generations. Throughout his career, Freeman has received critical acclaim for his acting, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Million Dollar Baby. He is also well-known for his roles in films such as Driving Miss Daisy (1990) and Invictus (2009). His diverse career, spanning film, music, and activism, has made him a respected figure in both entertainment and cultural preservation.
