Sunderland have finalized the £30 million signing of Malick Fofana from French club Lyon, securing the forward ahead of Crystal Palace. This marks the club’s fifth addition of the summer transfer window, with Fofana agreeing to a long-term contract at the Stadium of Light. The 21-year-old joins fellow new signing Kevin Danso, who also signed on deadline day, bolstering Sunderland’s squad as they prepare for their first European campaign since 1973. Fofana, who began his career at KAA Gent before moving to Ligue 1 side Lyon in 2024, is expected to play a key role on the left flank. According to Sunderland’s Director of Football, Florent Ghisolfi, Fofana brings the potential to thrive in the Premier League. “He is a player with huge potential, and we will provide him with the right environment to develop and prosper,” Ghisolfi said. He added that Fofana’s style of play will complement the versatility of other wide players at the club, who can operate on both flanks. In addition to Fofana, Sunderland have signed 18-year-old Ecuadorian striker Juan Riquelme Angulo from Independiente del Valle on a permanent deal. The club also added defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, as well as midfielder Jules Ahoka, this summer. These signings come after Sunderland finished seventh in their first season back in the Premier League, marking a successful return to the top flight. Despite a tough start to the 2026-27 season, with a loss to Ipswich in their opening match, Sunderland bounced back with a victory over Fulham. The club is now focusing on building a competitive squad for the upcoming season, with the new signings expected to contribute to both domestic and European campaigns.
