After years of focusing on autonomy, another revolution is emerging in the world of transportation. What if tomorrow, recharging an electric car became almost as fast as filling up with regular gasoline? One of the main drawbacks of electric vehicles is recharging. On long trips, this requires frequent stops. For short daily trips, it is still necessary to be able to plug in at home, which is not always possible, especially for those living in apartments without garages. What if the solution was to be able to recharge the car directly on the road? Honda has partnered with Taisei and Taisei Rotec to develop a system of roads capable of providing electricity to vehicles while they are in motion. Honda has created modules that transmit energy and will be integrated into roads, and other modules for receiving this energy, which will equip the vehicles. According to the manufacturer, these are the first devices to integrate both the inverter and the coil. Emitters integrated into the road will transmit energy to receivers placed under the vehicles. Honda has developed emitters that will be powered by direct current using Taisei's technology, and it is Taisei Rotec that will be responsible for their integration into the road. According to the statement, this allows for both simplified installation and high-power transmission. They hope to reach up to 150 kW in order to power large commercial vehicles. This is not the first technology of this kind; Electreon is already conducting tests of a similar system in the United States, and the eRoadArlanda project in Sweden has been testing its own system since 2018. However, for now, none of these systems have been commercialized. The three companies have already validated the technologies on a test track that can support the weight of heavy vehicles of 20 tons. By the end of 2026, they plan to continue the evaluations with vehicles, equivalent to one million wheel passes with a force of 49 kN each, or approximately the equivalent of 5 tons. Finally, Honda, Taisei, and Taisei Rotec plan to conduct a first demonstration on a public road in Japan starting in the fiscal year 2027.
