Residents of Empalot and nearby neighborhoods have expressed a deep sense of abandonment after three shootings occurred within three days at the start of October. The incidents, which took place on October 4, 5, and 6, 2026, on Aline-Viadieu square, left several people seriously injured. The shootings occurred in the middle of shops and just meters away from a municipal daycare, a place that is a common passage for local residents. One parent described the situation with the words, "The ground is dry, but our children cannot go out: outside, it is raining bullets." This has created a climate of fear similar to that experienced in other areas of Toulouse, such as Bellefontaine, the Izards, and the Faourette. The recent violence has revived painful memories of April 14, 2026, when gunfire had erupted near the daycare during the day. Now, the entire population of Empalot and surrounding areas lives in constant fear. Parents, residents, and public service workers share a common anxiety about the safety of their families and themselves. Despite Toulouse city hall's campaign promoting "Act + Protect Better," the feeling among locals is one of complete abandonment. There is no visible institutional presence, no support for local teams, and no public meetings or clear information being provided. Residents and families from Empalot and neighboring areas have made two urgent requests to the Toulouse city hall. First, they are demanding a continuous human security presence in the neighborhood and its facilities. This includes the permanent and visible deployment of protective measures around and within the daycare, school, and other public spaces such as the playground, library, and cultural center La Brique Rouge. The goal is to ensure the safety of users, pedestrians, and staff in these areas. Second, they are calling for complete transparency and a comprehensive emergency plan. This includes the immediate creation of a crisis cell that is open to residents, parents, and staff. The crisis cell would be responsible for developing clear confinement protocols and providing detailed information on the actual measures being taken to ensure the safety of everyone in the neighborhood. The residents are emphasizing the need for lasting actions, not just communication, to address the ongoing security concerns in their community.
