Elena Rybakina, who became the world number one in women's tennis after winning the US Open on September 12, is returning to competition at the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing. This marks the first time in her career that she will be both world number one and the top seed of a tournament. The WTA 1000 tournaments are among the most prestigious in the women's tennis circuit, offering substantial prize money and ranking points. Rybakina took a break after her US Open victory to handle media obligations, travel, and personal celebrations. During this time, she also focused on recovering from a foot injury. Although her foot has improved since resting, she still experiences discomfort at times. "Since I rested, my foot was a bit better. Now that I am back on the court, I can still feel it at times. I am trying to push myself and see how far I can go in this tournament," she said during a press conference in Beijing. Rybakina aims to maintain her world number one ranking until the end of the season. "Now, I am number one, which is great. But the season is not over yet. I want to continue to push and finish number one. You never know what can happen. There are many very good players and many difficult opponents. Everything can change. This is the goal now," she stated. Currently, Rybakina leads the WTA Race with 7,492 points, ahead of Aryna Sabalenka, who is second with 6,485 points. The WTA Race is a points system that determines qualification for the WTA Finals. Rybakina is already qualified for the WTA Finals in Indian Wells, which will take place later this year.
