Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. (the parent company of Google), is expanding its robotaxi service to include teenagers as young as 13 in Nashville, Tennessee. This marks the second city to offer Waymo's teen account program, following its initial launch in Phoenix last year. According to a company spokesperson, Nashville will be the "first of many" locations where teen accounts will be available through the Waymo app in the coming months. The expansion is expected to occur in cities where Waymo's operations are well-established and local laws permit such services. Nashville is a relatively new market for Waymo, which began its service in a 50-square-mile area in April 2026. Recently, Waymo's robotaxis became accessible via the Lyft app, broadening its reach. Over the past two years, the company has experienced significant growth, with paid robotaxi trips increasing from 50,000 per week in May 2024 to more than half-a-million per week earlier this year. During this time, Waymo has launched robotaxi services in a dozen cities. In the past month alone, the company expanded to Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa. The introduction of teen accounts is a strategic move for Waymo, aiming to tap into a demographic that often relies on parents or public transportation for mobility. The teen account must be linked to a parent or guardian, but once activated, teens can request autonomous rides anywhere within Waymo’s service area in Nashville and bring along friends. According to the company, teen account holders can bring up to three guests aged 13 to 17. However, the method for verifying these ages was not specified. This new feature could present challenges, such as managing potential overcrowding or ensuring compliance with age restrictions. On the other hand, it may also be appealing to parents who prefer their children to use a self-driving service rather than ride with a teenage driver. The program reflects Waymo’s ongoing efforts to adapt its services to different user groups and expand its footprint in the growing autonomous vehicle market.
