Highway section inaugurated in Nigeria

Nigerian authorities inaugurated the third section of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. This 375 km route aims to improve road safety, facilitate movement, and ease commercial exchanges in northern Nigeria.

Key route for economic activity

The highway is an important link between Kano, Kaduna, and other regions of Nigeria. It is used daily by merchants, transporters, and other economic operators, highlighting its significance for regional trade and movement.

Construction timeline and segments

The reconstruction project of this highway was awarded at the end of 2017, with official work starting in 2018. The construction site was divided into three sections: Abuja-Kaduna, 165 km, with ongoing work; Kaduna-Zaria, 73.4 km, already completed; and Zaria-Kano, approximately 137 km, with the third section having just been inaugurated.

Part of national transport development

This achievement is part of the investments made by the federal government to strengthen the national transport network. Nigeria, with an estimated area of 923,768 km² and a population of more than 240 million inhabitants, still needs to meet significant infrastructure needs.

Challenges ahead for the highway

Demographic growth and the intensification of exchanges are increasing pressure on existing routes, particularly in regions where roads are the main means of transport for people and goods. However, the operation of the highway will not, on its own, guarantee sustainable benefits.

Maintenance and future work needed

Authorities will need to ensure regular road maintenance, user safety, and the quality of related infrastructure. The continuation of work on the Abuja-Kaduna section is also a challenge to ensure the continuity of the route. In the long term, economic returns will depend on the ability to improve connections with secondary roads serving production areas and markets.
