The documentary series The Second World War with Tom Hanks is set to premiere on RMC Découverte on September 11. The series, produced by the American History Channel, will air four episodes each week until October 9. Each episode will be broadcast at 9:10 p.m. and will also be available for streaming on RMC+ starting at 6 a.m. the same day. Narrated by Tom Hanks, who also serves as an executive producer, the 20-episode series aims to cover the entire Second World War, from its beginnings in the 1930s up to the start of the Cold War. It will explore not only the major events of the war but also its political, human, and moral aspects. The series features many previously unseen historical archives, offering new perspectives on the conflict. It was developed in collaboration with the National Museum of World War II in New Orleans and historian Jon Meacham, a Pulitzer Prize winner. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the series is described as "the first major comprehensive narrative of the conflict since The World at War in 1974," highlighting its significance in the field of historical documentaries. The Wall Street Journal praised the series for its in-depth look at one of the most scrutinized events of the 20th century, noting that it gives viewers the sense that they have learned very little about the war in school. Tom Hanks, known for his work on war-related projects such as Band of Brothers and The Pacific with director Steven Spielberg, explained his involvement by emphasizing the relevance of personal choices during wartime to today's decisions. He sees the series as a way to connect historical events with modern issues, offering a deeper understanding of the past.
