Four people were hospitalized after a crane collapsed at a Miami construction site in the upscale Brickell neighborhood. The incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on Monday, according to Miami Fire Chief Robert Hevia, who spoke during a news conference. While the situation was described as complex, Hevia expressed relief that no one was killed in the incident, which involved both a collapsed crane and a car that caught fire.
A woman driving near the construction site noticed the crane beginning to fall. She managed to reverse her car slightly to escape just before the crane landed on her vehicle, which then caught fire. At the same time, the crane also fell on a storage container that was holding two construction workers. Emergency responders worked quickly to extricate the trapped workers while also battling the fire.
Firefighters described the scene as challenging, with one crew member cutting the workers free from the metal container while another focused on putting out the flames. The two workers, along with the crane operator who jumped out as the crane began to tip, were all taken to a nearby trauma center with minor injuries. The woman who was in the car was transported to a different hospital, also with minor injuries. According to Hevia, all other workers at the site were accounted for and not injured.
Officials have not yet determined the cause of the collapse, which involved a type of crane known as a piling rig. This kind of crane is used to drive columns deep into the ground to support large structures. It shares a similar base with traditional cranes but has a specialized upper section for this purpose. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and no names of the injured have been released.
