Sister attends hearing for first time

Éoline Panine, the sister of Cyane Panine, who died in the 2026 fire at a bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, attended a hearing for the first time on Monday, November 2. She spoke to BFMTV about her desire to "have answers to my questions" and to ensure "justice is done."

Sister criticizes responses from bar owner

Éoline Panine expressed frustration with the responses given by Jacques Moretti, the bar's owner, describing them as "sometimes incoherent, rough, and illogical." She noted contradictions in his statements and emphasized the importance of accountability.

Confrontation between co-owners canceled

Éoline Panine had hoped to witness a confrontation between Moretti and his wife, Jessica Moretti, who is also a co-owner of the bar. However, the confrontation was canceled due to Jessica Moretti's mental health condition. Éoline stated she has no personal issues with Moretti but trusts the justice system.

Sister brings photo of her sister to hearing

Éoline Panine brought a photo of her sister to the hearing to "show that she is present with us today." The hearing took place at the Energypolis university campus in Sion, in the Swiss canton of Valais.

Victims' families express frustration

Victims, their families, and close relatives attended the hearing in larger numbers than usual, expressing feelings of disappointment, frustration, and anger over the lack of answers. Lawyers criticized the slow pace of the proceedings.

Investigation examines multiple factors

The investigation focuses on the responsibility of the local authorities and the Moretti couple. It includes examining the work done by Jacques Moretti in the basement of the bar in 2015, operating permits, safety measures, and the acoustic foam that may have ignited the fire.

Criminal charges against 17 individuals

The criminal investigation targets 17 individuals, including the Morettis, eight local officials or former officials, and seven municipal employees. The local authorities admitted that no fire safety checks had been conducted in the bar since 2019. All charged are being prosecuted for "negligent homicide, negligent bodily injuries, and negligent fire."

Fire claimed many young lives

The fire occurred during the celebration of New Year's Eve, resulting in 41 deaths and 115 injuries. Most victims were teenagers and young adults, many of whom were foreigners, particularly Italians and French.
