In the first episode of Corps étrangers, the focus is on the initial experiences of international medical professionals in France. Dr Cecille Accioly, a vascular surgeon from Brazil, and Dr Babay Rais Asma, a general practitioner from Tunisia, recount their arrival in France, which diverged from the paths they had initially envisioned. Dr Accioly, who learned French as a child during stays with her father, a biologist, moved to France in 2021 with her husband and two children. She initially planned to stay for a few months but eventually decided to remain for several years. However, she had to start as a temporary intern (FFI), which led to financial challenges. She reported earning a trainee's salary of around 1,600 euros net, while a 40-45 square meter apartment in Paris for a family of four costs approximately 1,500 euros, forcing the family to consume their provisions. She and her husband often questioned why they were staying.
Dr Babay Rais Asma, who arrived from Tunisia, expected to quickly find a position as a general practitioner in a country with high demand and a shortage of doctors. However, her applications did not yield responses, and she put her professional goals on hold to care for her son, who has a disability. She worked as a social aide (AVS) for one and a half years. She expressed that she did not expect this path at all and experienced many moments of despair. Eventually, she bounced back and became a psychiatrist after obtaining her French diploma.
According to the episode, between 7,000 and 10,000 trained practitioners from outside the European Union (EU) are practicing in France. Future episodes of Corps étrangers will feature two other doctors, including Dr Félipe Orta and Dr Lotfi Khelfat, while examining other challenges they face upon arriving in France, including language barriers. Corps étrangers is a five-episode podcast series available on the website of Le Quotidien du Médecin and on all listening platforms. It is produced by Aude Frapin and Léa Petit Scagnola, directed by Anne Bayle-Iniguez and Audrey Chaussalet, with art direction by Polina Mangot, and with the help of Coralie Horgue.
