DRC seeks FAGACE membership to boost credit access and finance national projects through pan-African guarantees.
DRC seeks FAGACE membership
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is exploring membership in the African Guarantee and Economic Cooperation Fund (FAGACE) to improve access to credit and secure financing for its development projects. The minister of Finance submitted the application to the Council of Ministers on October 9 for approval.FAGACE’s role in financing
FAGACE does not directly provide loans but guarantees a portion of financial institutions’ commitments when they fund a company or project. This reduces the risk for lenders and can make it easier for businesses to obtain credit under favorable conditions.Benefits for DRC’s economy
Joining FAGACE could help Congolese companies and public project proponents access this guarantee mechanism, provided they meet the eligibility criteria. It would also strengthen the DRC’s influence within the Fund’s institutions.Institutional involvement
If accepted, the minister of Finance would join the Council of Governors of FAGACE, and the Central Bank of the Congo would participate in the Independent Evaluation Bureau. A regional office in the DRC could also be established to support collaboration and project oversight.Next steps unclear
The financial terms of membership and the timeline for implementation have not yet been finalized. The success of the initiative will depend on how effectively it is carried out and how well eligible entities can use the Fund’s guarantee mechanisms.
