A shooting at a rave in the northern Swiss canton of Aargau left one person dead and five injured early Sunday, according to local police and media reports. Authorities confirmed that a 22-year-old woman died from her injuries at the scene, while four men and one woman, aged between 24 and 27, were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to severe. All victims are Swiss residents, though Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni identified the deceased woman and two others as Italian citizens. She expressed her condolences for Maria Spinelli, the Italian woman who was killed, and noted that two other Italians were among the injured. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. local time in Aarau, the capital of Aargau, which is located 29 miles west of Zurich. The event, known as "Aarau Rave VOL. 7," was taking place at a horse racing track in the Schachen district. After the shooting, emergency services cordoned off the area, and a major police operation continued throughout Sunday. Authorities urged locals to avoid the area while investigators searched for potential links to the crime. Firefighters, police, and ambulances were present in large numbers, and police from neighboring Germany also participated in the search for suspects, according to the German news agency dpa. Aargau police spokesperson Bernhard Graser stated that all available police resources were being used to locate the suspect or suspects, emphasizing that the manhunt was ongoing at full speed. He noted that no motives had been identified yet. When asked if a terrorist attack was a possibility, Graser said that the timing—just as the event was ending—suggested it was more likely a fight or altercation rather than a targeted attack. Public shootings are rare in Switzerland, despite the country's relatively high rate of gun ownership. Graser described the incident as "unique in recent years," highlighting its unusual nature and the extensive police response. Swiss newspaper Blick reported that attendees initially thought the gunfire was part of the event's fireworks display until someone shouted "everyone down." The shooting occurred shortly after the rave ended, and police took the remaining guests to a nearby gym for questioning. Authorities also asked witnesses with videos or photos to share them with investigators. The Aargau Racing Club, which operates the horse racing track, expressed shock and sorrow over the incident, thanking emergency responders for their efforts. A Swiss DJ who performed at the event, Tekibo, wrote on Instagram that the shooting was "heartbreaking," emphasizing that raves should be places of freedom and safety. Aarau, a city with a population of about 22,300, lies just 18 miles south of the German border.
