Tower 14 for Windows has officially launched, bringing a new feature called "Branches Review" designed to help developers see all the branches in their code repositories at a glance. This update also enhances the software’s ability to detect when branches have been fully merged, even through advanced Git operations like squash and rebase merges. For users managing large repositories with many branches and tags, filtering options now allow them to display only the most recent 10, 25, 100, or 500 entries, making it easier to manage complex projects. Additionally, Tower Pro is now available free of charge to students, educators, and educational institutions, supporting aspiring developers. A 30-day free trial remains available for others who want to test the software before purchasing a subscription. The "Branches Review" view is found in the "Workspace" section of the sidebar, where users can compare different branches side by side against a selected reference branch. This feature allows sorting branches by name or last update date, and users can apply various filters to narrow their search. These filters include identifying branches that are active, obsolete, fully merged, mergeable, or those with conflicts, pull requests, or tracking errors. This level of detail helps developers keep their repositories organized and efficient. The improved "Fully Merged" detection in Tower Pro can now recognize branches that have been merged using squash or rebase methods—operations that traditional Git tools often overlook. This feature is exclusive to Tower Pro, though basic merge detection is still available in all versions. Tower now uses four distinct checks to determine if a branch is fully merged: Git Merge Detection, Merged Pull Requests, Merge Commit Analysis, and Removed Tracked Remote Branches. These checks ensure accurate identification of fully merged branches, improving the reliability of branch management. The "Fully Merged" help view now clearly shows which of these checks have been completed, with direct links to the relevant merge commit or pull request. This allows users to confirm a branch's status with a single click before deleting it. Users can also choose to hide the full merge indication for specific branches through the context menu, preventing Tower from reminding them about the status. This feature integrates with branch management tools introduced in Tower version 13, enabling users to archive fully merged branches with just a few clicks. Additional display options, such as a gear-shaped menu for sidebar settings and enhanced diff controls, have also been added, along with performance improvements and bug fixes.
