Kiwi consumption linked to better sleep

Recent studies suggest that eating kiwi in the evening may improve sleep quality. Researchers have found that adults with poor sleep who consumed about two kiwis one hour before bedtime experienced notable improvements in their sleep patterns.

Study details and participants

A study published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that participants experienced a 35% decrease in sleep latency, along with increased total sleep duration and sleep efficiency. The research was conducted by Taipei Medical University and involved 24 adults aged 20 to 55 who reported sleep disorders.

Methodology and measurements

Participants maintained their usual diet, allowing researchers to isolate the effects of the kiwi snack. Sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and actigraphy, a method that uses a wearable device to monitor movement and sleep patterns.

Similar findings in athletes

A more recent study published in 2023 in the journal Nutrients found similar benefits among elite athletes who followed the same evening ritual of eating kiwi before bedtime. This suggests that the effects of kiwi on sleep may extend beyond the general population to individuals with high physical demands.
