The new operating system for Google's devices, Googlebook OS, has drawn some criticism from users due to compatibility issues with Linux applications and certain web tools. Unlike its predecessor, ChromeOS, which had successfully run most Debian packages—commonly used Linux software—since 2018, the new Googlebook OS does not prioritize support for graphical Linux applications. This means that users who buy a device running Googlebook OS may find that some Linux programs do not work properly or at all, limiting them to Android apps and web-based tools that come pre-installed. While Googlebook OS includes a terminal that allows the installation of Linux applications, the integration with the main system is limited. For example, tools like Gimp (a popular image editor) and Termius (a terminal emulator) are not available in the app drawer and must be launched through the command line. This can be confusing for users unfamiliar with the terminal and may lead to technical problems, such as difficulty using these applications with a mouse. Google has not emphasized that Googlebook OS is essentially another version of Linux, which could be a concern for users who rely on Linux-based software. This lack of compatibility might be a problem for some, even though Googlebook OS is designed mainly for web tools and Android apps. For users who have used ChromeOS before, the ability to run Linux applications has been a useful feature for productivity tasks, and its absence in the new system could be a drawback. Some web applications, like Slack, also face installation issues on Googlebook OS. Google explains that these are not "compliant" Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), even though they work fine on other operating systems. This can be inconvenient, especially if the Android version of the app doesn't offer the same features. Meanwhile, Google plans to phase out ChromeOS by mid-2034 and transition all Chromebooks to Googlebook OS. However, challenges remain, including compatibility problems with some Android apps on Intel processors and difficulties in syncing with Samsung phones.
