Customs officials in Fréjus intercepted two separate cigarette trafficking operations on the A8 motorway in the Var region within less than a week, according to a press release issued on Tuesday, October 6. The incidents highlight ongoing efforts to combat illegal tobacco trade in the area. The first seizure took place on September 24 when customs officers inspected a vehicle registered in France traveling from Antibes to Puget. Inside the trunk, they discovered 6,500 grams of shisha tobacco, 300 grams of duty-free marked Camel cigarettes, and 160 grams of Italian marked Philip Morris cigarettes. The total estimated value of the shipment was 2,509 euros. Customs emphasized that the quantities and nature of the goods suggested commercial intent rather than personal use. As a result, the items were seized, and the driver was fined. A second seizure occurred on September 30, also on the A8. This time, customs officers inspected a medical taxi carrying three people: a driver, a patient, and an attendant. The vehicle was traveling from Cogolin to Nice. Under the driver's seat and in the trunk, officers found 5.6 kilograms of cigarettes from four different brands, all marked as Italian, packed in plastic bags. The estimated value of this shipment was 3,340 euros. The tobacco was seized, and the driver was fined as well. These incidents reflect the persistent challenge of illegal tobacco trafficking in the region. Customs continue to monitor and intercept such activities to prevent the circulation of untaxed products, which can have significant economic and health implications.
