Dominic Thiem has joined Andy Murray's team for the Rafa Nadal Academy Slam, an exhibition event celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Rafa Nadal Academy, scheduled for Saturday, October 3 in Manacor. The event will feature a doubles match between Team Rafa, led by Rafael Nadal, and Team Murray, led by Andy Murray. This special match is part of a celebration for the academy, which has trained many young tennis players over the years. Rafael Nadal's team includes Richard Gasquet, David Ferrer, and Carlos Moyà. Gasquet was announced earlier, while Ferrer and Moyà joined later. Moyà, a former world number one and French Open champion in 1998, was one of Nadal's coaches during the latter part of his career. Gasquet, who has known Nadal since childhood, had previously beaten him in the Petits As in 1999. Ferrer has shared many Davis Cup campaigns with Nadal, a team competition where countries compete in men's tennis. Team Murray includes Dominic Thiem, who retired in October 2024 after reaching two French Open finals, one Australian Open final, and two consecutive finals at the ATP Finals. Thiem, a former world number three and 2020 US Open champion, is one of only two players to have won at least five matches against each member of the Big Three, which refers to the top three players in men's tennis: Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer. The other members of Team Murray are Marat Safin and Fabio Fognini, with Fognini announced as the fourth and last member of the British team. The event will mark Nadal's first appearance on a court in front of an audience since his retirement, which was announced after the Davis Cup Finals 2024 in Malaga. The competition will take the form of a doubles exhibition match between the two teams, offering fans a chance to see some of tennis's most accomplished players in a relaxed, celebratory setting.
