An investigation by Mediapart, a French news outlet, has uncovered alleged antisemitic statements attributed to Jordan Bardella, the president of the National Rally (RN), a French political party. Bardella denies the accusations. The situation has been illustrated using a meme from the television series Person of Interest, which originally aired in the United States between September 2014 and May 2015. The meme, known as "Assassination chain," first appeared in 2018 on a Reddit forum dedicated to Person of Interest. It initially featured only an image of three characters from the show. A final version with two superimposed images was shared by another user in January 2019, and this version has since become widely used on social media. The "Assassination chain" meme is based on episode 10 of the fourth season of Person of Interest, titled "Cold War." This season first aired in the United States between September 2014 and May 2015 and later in France between January and March 2016. According to KnowYourMeme, a website that tracks internet memes, the original version of the meme appeared in the United States in 2018 on the Reddit forum, but without the second image. The meme format, which involves superimposing two images with text, is often used to depict a chain reaction or sequence of events following a specific incident. The "Assassination chain" meme has since become a popular internet format, used across multiple languages and platforms to discuss a wide range of topics, including politics, economics, other television series, the pandemic, video games, and personal experiences. It is now being referenced in the context of the allegations against Bardella. On the social media platform X, the account News Trust Media commented that it was time to bring out the "famous Mediapart meme" for Bardella, linking the meme to the current controversy. The use of the meme highlights how internet culture can be repurposed in political discourse, often to illustrate or critique public figures and events.
