A senior municipal police officer in Carcassonne, France, was exposed in November 2025 for making racist, sexist, and conspiratorial remarks that were unintentionally recorded by his body camera, according to the regional newspaper Midi Libre. The video was later shared on the social media platform X by Thomas Portes, an Insoumis deputy from Seine-Saint-Denis. In the footage, the officer is heard using derogatory terms such as "bicot" (a term often used to insult people of North African descent), "negro," and "Afghan," and also refers to someone as "bougnoule," a term typically used to describe people of North African or Middle Eastern descent in a derogatory manner. He also makes comments about becoming Muslim under President Emmanuel Macron and references the Algerian War, expressing support for individuals who were involved in torture during that time. The officer also made controversial remarks about French politics and society, referring to "gauchiasses" (a term used to describe left-wing politicians or policies) being in power for forty years and expressing views on the role of the patriarch in the family. He claimed that in ancient times, such as during the Cro-Magnon era, men were the ones who commanded in the household and that women who were not with their men were "killed outside." These statements reflect a deeply traditional and misogynistic view of gender roles. Following the release of the video, the officer took sick leave in January 2026 after the footage began circulating internally within the police force. He filed a complaint with the gendarmerie, claiming a violation of his privacy, which led to a preliminary investigation by the Carcassonne prosecutor's office. Despite being on sick leave, the officer was still involved in security operations, including being part of the team that protected Jordan Bardella, the president of the National Rally (RN) party, during a visit to support Christophe Barthès' mayoral campaign. His sick leave ended the day after Barthès was elected mayor of Aude. In the wake of the scandal, several municipal police officers have filed complaints against the officer, including one for threats and others for harassment. The incident has sparked internal debate and raised questions about the conduct of municipal police and the handling of sensitive issues within local government.
