A 75-year-old woman from West Virginia, Margaret Rog, has been arrested in connection with the death of her 76-year-old husband, who had severe health conditions, including dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and legal blindness. According to a criminal complaint obtained by The Independent, Rog was accused of leaving her husband on the toilet for nearly 19 hours on August 20, during which he was unable to stand. During that time, she reportedly did not provide him with food, water, or his prescribed medications. Prosecutors claim that Rog was aware of her husband’s need for assistance and did not seek help for him.
Her husband remained on the toilet until around 10 a.m. the next day, when his speech therapist arrived for an in-home visit and found him unresponsive. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with multiple serious conditions, including heart failure, respiratory failure, a blood clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), high sodium levels in the blood (hypernatremia), a severe infection (sepsis), and a muscle breakdown condition (rhabdomyolysis). He also had injuries to his backside and was found to have an "altered mental status," meaning his mental condition had significantly changed. Investigators concluded that his medical condition and the injuries he suffered from being left on the toilet were "significant contributing factors" to his death.
The man passed away at the hospital 10 days after being admitted. According to authorities, Rog made several self-incriminating statements to law enforcement, adult protective services, and family members during the investigation. These statements led investigators to believe that she was aware of her husband's need for help but intentionally withheld it. Rog was arrested on charges of abuse or neglect of an incapacitated adult, according to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office. She has pleaded not guilty and has posted a $75,000 bond, according to online court records. The case has raised questions about the care of individuals with severe health conditions and the responsibilities of caregivers.
