In recent years, certain subcultures within the LGBTQ+ community have gained recognition for their unique identities and shared values. Among these are the "bears," a group of gay or bisexual men who embrace a more rugged, hairy, and often older appearance. In Germany, the Tagesspiegel newspaper reported that some men who are described as "plus corpulents, plus vieux et plus poilus" (more corpulent, older, and more hairy) have formed their own community, the "bear" community, to fight for their representation. Alongside bears are also "otters," a nickname for leaner, hairy men, and "twinks," who are typically thin and clean-shaven. Thomas, a bear from Berlin, emphasized that the bear community is inclusive: even men who do not have the typical bear traits can feel welcomed and included. In the United States, the bear community is experiencing a shift due to the increasing use of weight-loss medications like Ozempic, a type of GLP-1 receptor agonist. These drugs have become a major breakthrough in the fight against obesity, a global public health issue that affected 1 billion people in 2022, according to the World Health Organization. In the U.S., 11 percent of the population is currently taking such medications. At Bear Week in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where the bear community celebrates self-love and connection, the presence of weight-loss drugs has become hard to ignore. Alvarez, a 54-year-old bear, shared how he lost 68 kilograms through a combination of GLP-1 treatment and surgery, while Michael, a 48-year-old bear, acknowledges the health benefits of weight loss but says he still prefers to be with men of similar size. The impact of this trend is being felt across the bear community. Stephen, who is more corpulent, notes that he has had more success in relationships since fewer bears are overweight. However, not everyone is embracing the change. Charlie Nuttall, a 39-year-old "cub" (a subcategory of bears), has lost 97.5 kilograms through bariatric surgery and GLP-1 treatments. He now feels like he has lost his tribe and questions the future of his community. For many, the health benefits of weight loss are clear, but the broader implications for the bear community are still unfolding. As Kevin Healy, a New York investment banker, remarked during Bear Week, the phenomenon of "bears on Ozempic" feels like a horror movie, highlighting the complex and evolving nature of identity within this community.
