Automattic, the company behind the popular blogging platform WordPress, has appointed Jeremy Klaperman as its new interim Chief Financial Officer (CFO), according to internal communications shared on Friday. Klaperman previously held the CFO role for WordPress VIP Enterprise, a premium service offering for businesses. This appointment comes after a period of significant leadership changes, including the recent departure of several executives, most notably former CEO Matt Mullenweg, who had been temporarily removed from his position last week. Mullenweg, who has since returned to the CEO role, shared details about Klaperman’s background in a Slack message, noting that he had previously served as the company’s CFO when former CFO Mark Davies was on sabbatical. Mullenweg stated that the board of directors—whose new members have not yet been announced—will still need to consider both internal and external candidates for the permanent CFO position. He also mentioned that a candidate for the role of Chief Legal Officer had verbally accepted the position, replacing Andy Missan, who left the company along with Davies. According to TechCrunch, Davies and Missan had signed mutual severance agreements during Mullenweg’s 33-hour leave of absence before he returned as CEO. Despite the recent turmoil, Mullenweg expressed confidence in the company’s financial stability, stating, “I have 100% confidence in our cash and financial position.” He emphasized that while there is still work to be done, the company is in control of its future and depends only on its ability to execute its plans. Mullenweg also encouraged employees to “stay tuned” for further board announcements. The company’s next board meeting is scheduled for September 23. In the meantime, Stephen Wolfram, the special advisor and creator of Wolfram|Alpha, will continue in his role. The situation highlights a period of transition for Automattic as it navigates leadership changes and seeks to stabilize its executive team.
