A San Francisco woman who survived a severe pit bull attack described the experience as deeply traumatic, saying she feared she would die as the dog repeatedly attacked her, causing severe injuries to both of her arms. Amber King, who is homeless, told ABC7 San Francisco that the incident occurred on September 8 in the Tenderloin neighborhood when a man she barely knew asked her to watch his dog while he waited for city housing. She agreed and tied the pit bull to a post. Moments later, the dog broke free and charged at her, King said.
The dog pinned King to the ground and attacked her for approximately 10 to 15 minutes before police arrived. "I was going to die. If I didn't fight, I was going to die. I kept hearing the crunching sound of the dog biting me," King said. "The dog was walking over me back and forth like a lion." She used her arms to shield herself during the attack, suffering severe injuries that required multiple surgeries and a week in the hospital. Police and animal control officers eventually arrived and used a catchpole to restrain the dog, which later died at the scene, according to SFGate. It is unclear what injuries the animal sustained during or after the attack.
King now has significant loss of mobility in both arms. She said she is beginning to regain some movement in the fingers of her right hand, but her left hand remains severely damaged. "This one. My left hand is completely damaged. Every nerve, every bone," she said. Even small movements in her right-hand fingers remain difficult. "Starting off with baby steps. You know my fingers a little bit because they look like they move easily. They don't. It's very difficult," she said. King said the physical injuries are only part of her recovery. She continues to relive the attack and has struggled to sleep because of nightmares.
Despite the trauma, King said she is grateful to have survived and credited the people who helped her during the attack, including a bystander named Ashley. "Yes, thank God for that Ashley lady. Whoever she is, I'd like to give her an extra thank you for coming and acknowledging what I was going through. I really appreciate that," King said. King has since secured housing while she recovers and said she hopes the ordeal will ultimately help her move toward a more stable life. A friend has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with her recovery expenses. King said she is thankful for the care she received at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and hopes the dog’s owner will come forward. No one has been held accountable for the attack or arrested, the San Francisco Police Department told ABC7 San Francisco. It is unclear whether investigators have identified the dog’s owner.
