A coroner has ordered Surrey County Council to release over 24,000 documents as part of the inquest into the death of 10-year-old Sara Sharif, who was found dead in her family home in Woking, Surrey, in August 2023. Sara’s parents, Urfan Sharif, 44, and Beinash Batool, 32, were each sentenced to life in prison in December 2024, with minimum terms of 40 and 33 years respectively for her murder. Sara’s uncle, Faisal Malik, 31, was found guilty of causing or allowing her death and received a 16-year sentence. Concerns about Sara’s welfare were raised shortly after her birth in 2013, and her family had been known to social services as early as 2010. Senior Coroner Richard Travers ordered the council to disclose 24,606 documents related to Sara’s siblings during a pre-inquest review at Surrey Coroner’s Court. He emphasized that he wants "all of the pages" made available for the inquest. Alethea Redfern, representing the council, opposed the full disclosure, arguing that many of the documents are "irrelevant" to the case and some pertain to matters with "no connection" to Sara’s death. She also noted that the documents are stored electronically, and releasing them all would go beyond what is "necessary." Mr. Travers expressed confusion about the council’s resistance, stating that the disclosure is a court order and not a decision for the council to make. He gave the council until the afternoon of 2 October to provide all the documents, warning that if they fail to do so, the chief executive of the council will be required to attend court. The inquest, originally scheduled for April next year, will now be postponed to a later date in October. Mr. Travers said he is not prepared to "rush" the proceedings, emphasizing that inquests are "important hearings" that must be handled "properly." During the court proceedings, three individuals who are set to give evidence at the inquest applied for anonymity to protect their identities from being revealed by the media. The coroner listened to their requests and said he would make a decision on the matter at a later, unspecified date.
