Nintendo announces new game title

Nintendo has announced The Spectrum Retreat: Redux, a first-person puzzle thriller, for Nintendo Switch 2, with a release date set for October 29, 2026. The game is developed by Dan Smith, who won the 2016 BAFTA Young Games Designer Award, and is a reworked version of the original game, which has already received awards.

Gameplay and storyline

The story begins at The Penrose Hotel, where the service is impeccable and the rooms are spotless. The player assumes the role of Alex, who wakes up in the Art Deco-style hotel, cut off from the outside world and experiencing unease. The corridors are silent, and the staff is constantly attentive, with each day following a familiar routine.

Puzzles and narrative depth

To escape, the player must solve a series of logic and spatial puzzles. The player absorbs and exchanges colors to pass security barriers, redirects energy, interacts with the decor, and must rethink the rules of each location. However, each puzzle solved brings the player closer to a secret that the hotel would prefer to keep hidden. Beneath the surface lies a story of memory and grief.

Technical improvements

Technically, this Switch 2 version completely reworks the lighting and reflections. Visual fidelity improves and HDR is supported, a technology that expands the contrast between dark and light areas of the image. The game also utilizes features specific to the console, including HD Rumble 2 vibrations and mouse controls. The sound transitions to 5.1 surround. Finally, comfort additions are planned: a chapter selection, as well as performance and gameplay optimizations.

Target audience and release date

This Redux is aimed at players who enjoy first-person puzzles tied to a dark storyline, as well as those who wish to discover or rediscover the original game in a revised version for the Switch 2. Its release date is set for October 29, 2026.
