A 40-year-old quote from professor Choron, describing students as "merdeux, des trous du cul, des cons" (roughly translated as "messy, bottom-feeders, fools") during an interview on the show Droit de réponse in 1982, has resurfaced in discussions about the current student protests. The question of what the term "lycéen" (student) represents today is being debated, especially as some students are filmed on trash bins and pallets, while others engage in pyromaniac behavior. According to a survey by Odoxa, 62% of French people believe the current mobilization is justified, but this does not clarify the specific motivations of the students. A survey by Ifop indicates that 44% of 15-17 year olds consider themselves left-wing, down from 54% in 1994. Young men are more likely to identify with the right (64%) compared to young women (47%). The slogans and actions of the protesters do not fully represent the views of all students. A survey by Ifop also shows that only 44% of students feel they are living the best time of their lives, compared to 63% in 1984. Students also place a high value on money and family, with 50% considering money very important and 70% considering family very important, both higher than in 1984. Additionally, 60% of students find it unacceptable to criticize a religion. Regarding their education, 74% of students believe school days start too early, 69% find the duration of classes too long, 63% feel they lack sleep, and 74% have difficulty concentrating by the end of the day. The platform Parcoursup, used for higher education applications, is seen as a source of anxiety by 80% of families, according to a survey by Tonavenir-Studyrama in 2026. The current student movement is seen as a mix of different issues and motivations, similar to the gilet jaune movement, which was not a unified expression of the people. The complexity of the situation suggests that neither "platforms for dialogue" nor any specific announcements will easily resolve the issues, except possibly addressing concerns about Parcoursup and the reintroduction of mobile phones in classrooms.
