The WD_Black D30 2 To is an external solid-state drive (SSD) that connects to computers and gaming consoles through a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port, which can transfer data at speeds up to 10 Gb/s. In testing by Clubic, the drive managed to read data at 935 Mo/s and write data at 850 Mo/s, which are impressive speeds for an external SSD. It is compatible with a variety of platforms, including PCs, Macs, and several gaming consoles like the PS4, PS5, Xbox, and Xbox Series. However, on the PS5, it can only be used for installing PS4 games or archiving PS5 games, not for running them directly from the drive. The WD_Black D30 2 To features a black, angular case with a small white LED that lights up when the drive is in use. It can be mounted horizontally or vertically using a removable base, making it easier to integrate into a desk or console setup. However, its size—96 x 45.9 x 60.5 mm with the base—and weight of 137 grams make it more of a stationary device than something easily carried around. It is designed to stay in one place once set up, rather than being used on the go. With a storage capacity of 2 terabytes, the WD_Black D30 2 To is ideal for storing a large collection of games or other digital media. It is currently available for 199 euros at Fnac, which is significantly lower than its usual price of around 300 euros. Despite its strong performance, it lags behind some of the top external SSDs in its class, such as the Samsung T7 Shield, Sabrent Rocket Nano Rugged, and Kingston XS2000, which offer better speed or durability. During extended file transfers, such as copying a 200 gigabyte file, the drive's performance drops significantly, starting at around 550 Mo/s and falling to about 220 Mo/s as the write cache fills up. The case also does not effectively dissipate heat, with temperatures reaching up to 65°C after prolonged use. Despite these drawbacks, the WD_Black D30 2 To is still viewed as a solid option for users who prioritize storage capacity and a sleek, gaming-focused design over the highest possible transfer speeds.
