Humanoid robot H2-X introduced

Chinese startup Unitree has introduced a new humanoid robot named H2-X, described as a "kung fu legend" and a "bodyguard." Unlike the H1 model, which is designed for general public use and personal assistance, the H2-X is specifically built for security purposes.

Robot's capabilities demonstrated

In a video released by Unitree, the H2-X is shown performing acrobatic feats such as jumping over a vehicle, breaking a door with a knee, and executing kung fu moves. It is also depicted jumping from a high place, like a container, before performing these actions, and intervening against an aggressor by delivering blows and potentially lifting a car or pushing a person to protect them from danger.

Technical specifications and limitations

The H2-X is an evolution of the H2 model, which stands 1.80 meters tall and weighs 70 kilograms. It has an autonomy of eight hours in a standing position. However, the video does not provide detailed information on whether the robot is truly marketable, leaving many questions about its real-world capabilities and functionality.

Uncertainties about the robot's operation

It is unclear how the H2-X would react in real-world situations, how it determines that a situation is dangerous, or how it follows an aggressor and intervenes if the aggressor evades it. The video does not clarify whether the movements displayed were pre-programmed or if the robot is remotely controlled. The level of autonomy achieved by the H2-X and whether it can be commanded by voice or given orders by the person it is supposed to protect are also unknown.

Market and regulatory concerns

The video highlights the robot's impressive mechatronic capabilities but leaves many uncertainties. The nascent robot market in China and elsewhere is not yet regulated, raising concerns about the coexistence of robots and humans and the prevention of unnecessary injuries and accidents. Unitree's demonstration of the H2-X may be more of a showcase of its innovation capabilities rather than a fully developed product, or it could be maintaining the fantasy of a humanoid robot that is soon as versatile as a human.
