Epic Games updates anti-cheat system for Linux

Epic Games is working on a new version of its anti-cheat system, Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC), specifically for Linux. This update is designed to allow games like Fortnite to run on free and open-source operating systems, which have previously faced technical barriers.

Linux compatibility aims to expand game access

The new version of EAC for Linux is intended to remove obstacles that have prevented multiplayer games from functioning on free distributions. Epic Games says it plans to bring the Linux version of EAC up to the same level as its Windows version "in the near future," though no timeline was given.

Linux systems need specific requirements

For Linux systems to work with the updated EAC, they must meet certain requirements, such as Secure Boot. Epic is collaborating with maintainers of various Linux distributions to ensure the changes are properly implemented for multiplayer games.

Steam Deck faces compatibility challenges

The Steam Deck, a handheld gaming device, currently lacks the necessary features to support the updated anti-cheat system. However, both Valve, the company behind the Steam Deck, and Epic Games are working on a solution to address this issue.

Fortnite leads the way for new EAC version

Fortnite will be the first game to use the new version of EAC for Linux. Other game developers are expected to gain access to this updated system in the future, as part of Epic Games’ broader efforts to support free software in the gaming industry. This announcement coincided with the release of a preview version of the new Epic Games Launcher.
