The Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives (Inrap) is organizing a series of archaeological events across France as part of the European Heritage Days (JEP), which will take place on Saturday 19 September and Sunday 20 September 2026. These events aim to engage the public with archaeology through exhibitions, open days at excavation sites, and various meetings. The European Heritage Days are an annual event across Europe that promote awareness and appreciation of cultural heritage. In Montluçon, in the Allier department, the exhibition What's new in the Middle Ages? will be held at the Château des Ducs de Bourbon from 10 am to 5 pm on both days. This exhibition is designed and produced by the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie in partnership with the Inrap. It offers a look into recent discoveries and research related to the Middle Ages. In Orgnac l’Aven, in the Ardèche department, the exhibition More beautiful death: investigations on prehistoric funerary rites will take place at the Aven d’Orgnac, Grand site de France, Cité de la préhistoire. The event will run from 10 am to 7 pm on Saturday 19 September and Sunday 20 September 2026. This exhibition explores ancient burial practices and the significance of death in prehistoric societies. In Taninges, in the Haute-Savoie department, the exhibition What's new in the Middle Ages? Season 2 will be held at the Chartreuse de Mélan. The exhibition will be open from 10 am to 12:30 pm and from 1:30 pm to 6 pm on both days. Designed by the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie in co-production with the Inrap, this exhibition continues the exploration of how the Middle Ages influenced the modern world. In Feurs, in the Loire department, the Inrap is hosting two workshops on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September from 2 pm to 5:30 pm at the Musée de Feurs. The first workshop, Let the dead speak, involves performing a fine excavation of an ancient cremation using archaeological tools. The second workshop, Put the pieces together, allows participants to reassemble broken pottery to understand its function, dating, and origin. In Clermont-Ferrand, in the Puy-de-Dôme department, the exhibition Watch out for the Gauls! will be held at the Gare de Clermont-Ferrand. This exhibition, designed in partnership by the Inrap and SNCF Gares & Connexions, offers an archaeological journey through the history of the Gauls. The themes of the 2026 European Heritage Days are "Photography heritage" and "Endangered heritage: revive, resist, reimagine." These themes highlight the importance of preserving cultural heritage through modern means and addressing the challenges faced by endangered sites and traditions.
