In September 2026, several new climbing routes were established across mountain ranges worldwide, marking significant achievements for climbers and adding to the growing list of routes in some of the world's most challenging terrain. Between September 2 and 3, Simon Messner and Martin Sieberer completed a new route on the west face of the Piz de Lavarella in the Dolomites. The route, rated 7a/A2, remains unnamed and is yet to be freed—meaning it has not yet been climbed without the use of aid techniques. Simon Messner had previously attempted the route alone in 2022 and again with Sieberer the following year. Between August 31 and September 5, Simon Gietl opened three routes in the Antersasc Valley, part of the Dolomites. The first, Offline (6 pitches, VIII+), was climbed with Klaus Gruber on the Tour d'Antersasc. The second, Mindset (250 m, 7 pitches, VIII+/IX-), was climbed with Michael Stadler on the east face of Antersasc. The third, Schmetterling (240 m, 6 pitches, VII+), was climbed with Dani Arnold on the same wall but to the right of Mindset. On September 11, Raymond Eckland, Jon Zerain, and Josue Sanchez opened Shumaq Warmi (850 m, WI4+, M5, VI) on the west summit of Chacraraju in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru. The climb was completed after two bivouacs in near-winter conditions and heavy snowfall. Josue Sanchez noted the route included sections with angles of 60–70° and highly exposed mixed terrain, combining ice, rock, and other elements. On September 12, Polish climbers Jacek Pawel Czech, Szymon Kita, and Aleksandra Kita opened a new route on the southeast face of Gasherbrum VI (6,979 m) in the Karakoram. The route, named In Memory of Artur Hajzer, honors a Polish climber who died in 2013 on Gasherbrum I. The route does not reach the summit, reigniting the debate about new routes that do not reach the summit. The summit of Gasherbrum VI remains unclimbed. Also on September 12, guides Sophie Jacob and Pablo Etienne opened L'Écho des cristalliers (500 m, ED-, 6cmax, P2+) on the northeast face of the Capucin du Requin in the Mont-Blanc massif. The route includes spits at all belays, protection for exposed sections, and rappels for descent, allowing for easy retreat if needed. In September, Edu Marin, Cesar Augusto Vicuña Pajuelo, and Francesco Bosco opened El Jardín del Edén (550 m, 8a?) on a wall in the Llanganuco sector of the Cordillera Blanca. Edu Marin stated that El Jardín del Edén is only the first part of a larger project, which will eventually connect to El Fruto Prohibido, a futuristic route they plan to work on in the coming year. Also in the Cordillera Blanca, Martin Contreras Ried and Franco Rojas opened Al que madruga, el pulento lo ayuda (350 m, TD, 90°, M3) on the west Cashan (5,686 m). The route is dedicated to the spirit of Thomas Franccini, an Italian climber who died in 2024 near the area, on the northeast face of the Cashan.
