The municipal elections in Évreux, a city in the Eure department of France, were canceled by a court after ballots temporarily disappeared during the vote count in March. On Thursday, October 8, the administrative court in Rouen ruled that the elections held on March 22 should be canceled due to the temporary removal of 100 ballots from a polling station during the vote count. This issue was raised by Samuel Brigantino, the second-place candidate in the election, who filed a complaint with the court. In the March election, outgoing mayor Guy Lefrand, representing the diverse right political group, was re-elected with 34.58% of the votes, securing a lead of 520 votes over Brigantino, who also belonged to the same political group. Two other candidates, Gérard Silighini from the left union and Eugénie Petitjean from Rassemblement national, came in third and fourth place, respectively, with 22.12% and 12.66% of the votes. The court described how the president of the polling station removed an envelope containing 100 ballots from the main counting room and took it to a different room not visible to representatives of political lists or the public before returning with the same envelope. While the court acknowledged that this removal did not affect the outcome of the first round, which gave the mayor's list, Unis pour Évreux, a clear lead, it noted that it could have impacted the allocation of the remaining 21 seats, which are filled proportionally. Based on this, the court decided to cancel both rounds of the municipal elections in Évreux. The decision is not final, as an appeal can still be filed before the Council of State. Mayor Guy Lefrand has already filed an appeal after the court's ruling. In a statement, he expressed his surprise at the decision but stated that he would continue to manage the city as usual. "This decision does not change anything regarding our responsibilities towards the citizens of Évreux," he said. "With my team, we will continue to fully exercise our mandates and work every day for Évreux."
