Tool disables Apple Intelligence on macOS 27

A free open-source tool called RemoveMacAI allows users to disable Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and remove its associated models, freeing up approximately 12 GB of storage space on the disk. The application is available as software or a command-line interface.

Apple removed the disable switch

With the release of macOS 27, Apple removed the switch that previously allowed users to disable Apple Intelligence with a single gesture. Disabling the functions individually does not remove the models, which remain on the disk.

Configuration profile deletes models

A configuration profile and closed port can be used to delete the models without affecting SIP. The tool's developer, Om Lahore, explained on Reddit that a dozen settings need to be adjusted, including several in Screen Time, to fully disable Apple Intelligence.

Storage impact of Apple Intelligence

The models weigh approximately 12 GB, sometimes more according to users. On a Mac with 256 GB of storage, this is not negligible. It was previously reported in January 2025 that Apple Intelligence did not free up all its storage once disabled.

Installation and requirements

The installation is done via Homebrew (brew install omlahore/tap/removemacai), a one-line script, or a downloadable application. It requires an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 27, with the tool in version 0.2.3 or later on macOS 27.0.1.

Tool does not collect data

The GitHub repository specifies that the tool does not collect any data, and it can also disable usage analytics and personalized advertisements. To undo everything, removemacai revert deletes the profile, and macOS redownloads the models as soon as a feature is reactivated.

Functionality loss after removal

Without the models, several native elements no longer function, namely: Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension, summaries, Clean Up in Photos, or the code completion in Xcode. The "Use the model" action in Shortcuts is also disabled.

Voice dictation remains available

Voice dictation remains available, as it is a separate setting. Note that a process named "Siri" remains visible. Under macOS 27, this is actually the Spotlight window. However, in macOS 26.4, Apple deprecated certain restriction keys used by the tool. They still work under macOS 27.0.1, but an update could change this.
