According to the Foundation for Women, 40% of feminist associations are forced to turn away individuals in need because they lack the necessary resources. Laura Slimani, director of projects at the organization, told Franceinfo on September 17 that only the government can address this issue and take responsibility for the billions of euros required to support these groups. The Foundation is currently releasing its annual barometer, which highlights a growing crisis in funding for organizations that assist victims of gender-based violence.
The barometer was based on a survey of 100 aid associations, with 60% reporting poor financial health and a shortage of essential staff, such as social workers, lawyers, and psychologists. Slimani explained that many women and children are being turned away from services because the associations cannot afford to support them, leading to dangerous situations where vulnerable individuals are left without help. The survey also found that two-thirds of feminist associations are worried about their future, with 60% in a deteriorated financial state and 80% lacking the necessary team to carry out their work effectively.
The Foundation's barometer shows that the most affected services are individual support, prevention, awareness, and educational programs. Despite this funding crisis, the number of women and children being helped by these associations has doubled over the past decade. Slimani attributed this increase to the rise in public awareness, particularly due to the MeToo movement and the Grenelle on domestic violence. She also noted that this trend aligns with the increase in complaints reported to police and justice services over the same period.
The Foundation for Women is calling for three billion euros in funding, with part of this amount designated for supporting local associations that provide essential services to victims. Without additional resources, Slimani warned that the current trend of rising femicides and mental health crises among victims could continue. She emphasized the risk of these individuals falling into precarious situations, including severe mental health issues and even suicide attempts, if they are not adequately supported.
