If an iPhone loses power or is turned off, it might still be possible to locate it, depending on several factors such as how long it has been off, whether the battery is completely dead, and if the Find My feature is properly set up. Apple's Find My feature is a tool that helps users track their devices and is essential for locating a lost or stolen iPhone. For the feature to work, users must enable settings like Find My iPhone, Find My network, Location Services, and Bluetooth. Additionally, the iPhone must have sent its location to Apple within the last seven days to be locatable. To check if these settings are enabled, users can open the Settings app, go to their name, and look under the Find My section. Both Find My iPhone and Find My network should be turned on. Also, the "Send Last Location" option should be enabled, which ensures the iPhone sends its final location to Apple when the battery is critically low. If an iPhone is turned off, it can still be located for about 24 hours after shutdown, provided there is still some battery left. If the battery drops to zero, the phone may enter Power Reserve mode, which lasts around five hours. During this time, the phone can still be used for Apple Wallet functions like car keys or transit cards and broadcasts a low-power Bluetooth signal to nearby Apple devices. After this period, the last known location can be viewed in the Find My app for up to seven days. If the phone has been missing for more than seven days, the location will no longer be available, and the app will display "no location found." To help prevent thieves from disabling the phone, users should disable Control Center access when the phone is locked in the Face ID & Passcode settings. This prevents thieves from putting the phone in airplane mode. However, keeping Siri enabled is safe, as it will require an unlock before performing sensitive actions like enabling airplane mode. iPhone 11 or newer models (excluding certain models like the iPhone SE and "e" models) with an ultra-wideband chip and running at least iOS 15 can still be located even when turned off. If the phone has been missing for more than seven days, users can use the Find My app or website on another device to mark it as lost. This will activate Lost Mode if someone tries to power it on, and with Stolen Device Protection, Face ID or Touch ID is needed to disable this feature. A message can also be displayed to help the finder contact the owner.
