India's global showcase at Sial fair
India is highlighting its international ambitions at the Sial trade fair in Paris, where it is the event's "partner country" for the first time. The fair, running until Wednesday, includes a national pavilion featuring over 220 Indian companies focused on promoting the country's exports, particularly in food products.India's export focus on agriculture
The fair's theme, "India: Feeding Our Future," underscores the nation's efforts to grow its agricultural and agri-food sectors. These sectors currently generate about 55 billion dollars annually and are a key part of India's economic strategy.Trade agreements with European partners
Jawed Ashraf, president of the Indian Organization for Trade Promotion, mentioned that India recently signed a free trade agreement with the EU, the most ambitious with any partner. This agreement, set to begin in early 2027, will lower tariffs on items like olive oil and European wines and allow India to export certain agricultural products under specific quotas.Expanding into processed foods
India's agricultural exports, including rice, tea, and spices, are increasingly moving into processed products, which offer higher value. Anne Malhotra from the Anju group noted that European demand for Indian goods is rising, influenced by health trends and plant-based diets, while new Indian restaurants in European capitals are also boosting interest in Indian cuisine.Challenges facing Indian exporters
Despite the opportunities, many Indian companies at the fair are struggling with global and environmental challenges. Hasnain Badami of Murtuza Foods said business has slowed, and Ranajay Chakraborty, a rice producer, reported losses due to the war in the Gulf. Poonacha Kodava, who exports 95% of his cucumber and pickles, anticipates a 40% drop in production due to climate change and drought.
