A special tribute night dedicated to the late American singer Dolly Parton will air on BBC Two on Saturday, 19 September. The event will honor Parton, who passed away on 25 August at the age of 80 after a short illness. The programming will begin with a performance from her 2014 Glastonbury festival set, where she performed on the Pyramid Stage during the festival's Legends slot on Sunday afternoon. Parton sang several of her most famous songs, including Jolene, Coat of Many Colours, 9 to 5, Islands in the Stream, and I Will Always Love You, with the audience echoing the lyrics back to her. The tribute also includes a documentary titled Sisters in Country: Dolly, Linda and Emmylou, which is broadcast on BBC Four. The film explores the long-term friendship and musical journeys of Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris. It highlights how their distinct styles of country music and personal connection helped bring together fans through their 1987 collaborative album, Trio. The evening will end with a review of Parton's best BBC performances, showcasing her lasting songwriting talent and the humor that played a key role in her rise to fame in the 1970s. Over a career that spanned more than 60 years, Dolly Parton sold over 100 million records worldwide and wrote more than 3,000 songs, including Coat of Many Colours and Joshua. Beyond her music, she was a successful businesswoman, owning the Dollywood theme park, and a philanthropist. Her Imagination Library, a program that gives books to children to encourage a love of reading, has gifted over 300 million books globally. Tributes from around the world poured in after her passing, with notable figures like Miley Cyrus, Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Mick Jagger, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé expressing their admiration for her contributions as both a musician and humanitarian. Cyrus, who is Parton’s goddaughter, shared on Instagram: “The feeling of losing my Aunt Dolly is beyond what feels right to share. Our most sacred moments were private and they'll stay there behind the stage, beneath the glamour & between our hearts.” The Dolly Parton tribute night will air on BBC Two starting at 9:15pm on Saturday, 19 September, with all programs available on BBC iPlayer after the broadcast.
